Reflection

My favorite poems that I wrote were probably the Borrowed Poem, Sensory Poem, and If I Were in Charge of the World.  I like the first two because I think I got really creative with them and the third because it is very strongly what I feel.  My favorite type of poetry to write is definitely free verse things that are descriptive and portray strong emotion.  For some reason I like the sad and depressing ones where a friend dies rather than happy things.  It is easier to write about sad things because they are all over the place and impossible to miss unless you block them out.  I enjoy writing poetry because I can express my emotions in a creative way.  I can't draw or paint very well, and I have tried writing music and failed.  So writing is left in a way to express myself.  Also I don't feel huge competition in writing like I do in playing Clarinet, so it makes it stress free and lots of fun.  I learned a lot about different types of poetry and different ways they can be written.  I never really knew there were so many types of poems and I find it really neat that there are.  I hope that this blog says that I am a Christian girl who loves her friends and family and music.  I want it to also show that I take emotions very seriously.

Poem Analysis

The Tear by Lord Byron
When Friendship or Love
Our sympathies move;
When Truth, in a glance, should appear,
The lips may beguile,
With a dimple or smile,
But the test of affection's a Tear:

Too oft is a smile
But the hypocrite's wile,
To mask detestation, or fear;
Give me the soft sigh,
Whilst the soultelling eye
Is dimm'd, for a time, with a Tear:

Mild Charity's glow,
To us mortals below,
Shows the soul from barbarity clear;
Compassion will melt,
Where this virtue is felt,
And its dew is diffused in a Tear:

The man, doom'd to sail
With the blast of the gale,
Through billows Atlantic to steer,
As he bends o'er the wave
Which may soon be his grave,
The green sparkles bright with a Tear;

The Soldier braves death
For a fanciful wreath
In Glory's romantic career;
But he raises the foe
When in battle laid low,
And bathes every wound with a Tear.

If, with high-bounding pride,
He return to his bride!
Renouncing the gore-crimson'd spear;
All his toils are repaid
When, embracing the maid,
From her eyelid he kisses the Tear.

Sweet scene of my youth!
Seat of Friendship and Truth,
Where Love chas'd each fast-fleeting year
Loth to leave thee, I mourn'd,
For a last look I turn'd,
But thy spire was scarce seen through a Tear:

Though my vows I can pour,
To my Mary no more,
My Mary, to Love once so dear,
In the shade of her bow'r,
I remember the hour,
She rewarded those vows with a Tear.

By another possest,
May she live ever blest!
Her name still my heart must revere:
With a sigh I resign,
What I once thought was mine,
And forgive her deceit with a Tear.

Ye friends of my heart,
Ere from you I depart,
This hope to my breast is most near:
If again we shall meet,
In this rural retreat,
May we meet, as we part, with a Tear.

When my soul wings her flight
To the regions of night,
And my corse shall recline on its bier;
As ye pass by the tomb,
Where my ashes consume,
Oh! moisten their dust with a Tear.

When reading this poem I came across a few words I think we should know. Beguile means to charm or divert. A deceit is to mislead or cheat.  And a bier is a stand for a coffin.  This poem is literally about a man who goes off to war and comes back to find his wife has cheated on him with his friend.  He forgives them and hopes that when he dies they will remember him lovingly.  The title is important because a tear is a sign of the many different emotions people have.  The author uses imagery with all the places a tear is present.  It is easy to imagine a bride crying at her wedding, an injured soldier at war, or friends crying at a funeral.  He also uses personification by saying "Glory's career..." This creates layers of meaning.  The author uses rhyme with words like youth, truth and pride, bride.  The rhyme scheme is a, a, b, c, c, b and the form is eleven six line stanzas.  The speaker of the poem could be the poet because the poet and the speaker are both male.  The shift occurs in the ninth stanza when the speaker says "by another possest..." at this point the speaker accepts the betrayal.  The tone of this poem is a betrayed calmness.  The speaker is very sad, but he has come to peace with what happened to him.  I interpreted the theme as it is not what happens to you but how you choose to repond which determines the outcome. I cam to this conclusion because the speaker has had a very bad thing happen to him.  He could easily be angry and hate, but he chooses to forgive, making him a happier person.

Lament

I am gone forever.
My mother was my safe place,
the dark warm fluid my home.
Until the doctors came one day,
and took my life away.
My mother didn't want me,
my father wasn't there.
She acted in a selfish way.
Every day I am joined
in this bright and curious place,
with other who are gone.
Gone forever as I am.

In Charge of the World

If I were in charge of the world
Nobody would date until nineteen and nobody would kiss until twenty.
People would live according to JOY,
Jesus first, others second, yourself last.

I would outlaw Lady Gaga and Usher
and also the murder of innocent babies.
Teenagers would try and show respect.
And nobody would be unloved.

Parents would love and understand.
Work would never take the upper hand.
Hawaii would be an easy vacation
and dogs would always have a home.

Students who judge would be locked away
and girls would no longer vomit.
All countries would be happy, carefree, and bright
If I were in charge of the world.

Synonym Poem

LAUGH
Snicker, cackle, chuckle, giggle.
Something that makes little ones smile and wiggle.

CRY
Blubber, weep, bawl.
Makes one want to hide in a shawl.

Activity, being, vigor, dash
Might tragically end with an awful crash.

Sensory Poem

Feels like hot water or scratchy quilts.
Tastes like jalapenos, lemons, and mac and cheese.
Looks like a broken hour glass or a shattered mirror.
Sounds like a shrieking owl or nails on a chalkboard.
Smells like burning rubber and rotten eggs.
Makes me feel exasperated, irritable, and outraged.
Anger

Art Response Poem

Music flows through the heart like blood.
Calming the listener or hyping them up.
The Clarinet fills the room with a sweet melody.
The guitar strums out energetic rhythms.
The notes fly off the page as the musician plays.
Beautiful major chords mingle with minor ones.
Passion is heard and seen as the Clarinetist sways.
The guitarist loves it too as he taps his foot.
Neither would know what to do without music.
Both would be lost in a world of unexpressed emotions.

Borrowed Poem

Borrowed from Gordon Parks

The world smiled in on them.
Holding their newborn baby girl.
She was to tiny and so new.
Her eyes opened and closed.
"The most beautiful thing,"
her mother said,
"I've seen in all my years."
Her father chuckled to himself,
as the little baby yawned.
His wife he loved with all his heart
           since they engaged in '87.
But now today in '95 he learned something new.
Love at first sight exsists, he thought
when you have such a beautiful baby girl.
